The Backyard Ultra – What a Day for the Midhurst Milers & Juniors!

What an unforgettable day for the Midhurst Milers’ inaugural Backyard Ultra! The atmosphere was electric from the first yard, as runners gathered at dawn ready to take on the challenge of mind over miles.

Our Junior Milers joined in at midday for a maximum of 10 yards equating to 10 miles / 16km! 23 Juniors – yes I will say that again, 23 juniors completed the full 10 miles which is an incredible feet. Likely the longest run for most of them in their lives so far!

Each lap brought new stories of determination, grit, and camaraderie — with the infamous “saucepan of submission” claiming more and more brave souls as the hours ticked by.

By early evening, the field had thinned and the tension was rising. Spectators and fellow runners cheered on the final contenders as they set off again and again, digging deep with every step.

By 8pm, only two runners remained — locked in an incredible battle of endurance and willpower. In the end, Paul Williams triumphed after completing an impressive 12 yards and 50 miles, earning well-deserved cheers (and a seat!) as the first-ever Midhurst Milers Backyard Ultra Champion!

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part — whether you ran one yard or twelve, you embodied the true Milers spirit: supportive, determined, and always smiling through the miles.

Special thanks must also go to Becky from Perfect Motion Physio who kept our runners moving with expert sports massages throughout the day. Your support and skill made all the difference and helped many push beyond their limits.

Here’s to the next one — same place, same saucepan, and hopefully just as many smiles!
